Steel for cold work tool are high carbon steels with relatively low additions of tungsten, manganese, chromium, and molybdenum alloys. In contrast to the W series, these alloy additions increase hardenability, which allows oil quenching with less distortion. These steels are relatively inexpensive, and their high carbon content provides adequate wear resistance for short run applications. It is used for blanking and forming dies, gauges, collets, etc.
