Hot work tool steels are necessary for the hot-forming of iron, non-ferrous metals and alloys. They used in pressure die casting, extrusion, drop forging, tube and glass production where varying thermic stresses may be present from the material being worked on. At a constant temperature, these steels will ensure reliable performance of tools employed.

In group of Chrominum Hot Work Tool Steels, with their relatively low carbon content and high chromium level, promote toughness at the normal working hardness of 400 to 600 HV. Tungsten and molybdenum additions to the H10 and H14 steels increase red hardness and hot strength, although this may lead to reduced toughness. The H11, H12 and H13 grades provide air hardening qualities for low distortion in hardening, making them ideal for hot die work such as extrusion dies, die casting dies, forging dies, mandrels and shears. They are able to resist temperatures up to 540°C while maintaining tensile strength levels of close to 5 MPa. Finally, following its introduction in the US before adopted in Europe; a modified version of the H10 grade introduced offering improved toughness.
