Does Stainless Steel Rust | IBC Metal Group

Does stainless steel rust? Will it lose its luster? Of course, if natural factors or human factors continue to destroy the steel surface, then the iron will continue to oxidize, resulting in the loss of anti-rust effect.

What Causes Stainless Steel to Rust?

1.Halides are one of the important factors that cause stainless steel to rust. Common halides include chlorides, fluorides, bromides, iodides, and some interhalogen compounds.

Among them, chlorides are often exposed to by ordinary people in nature and daily life. For example, salt, seasonings, saline, disinfectants, and sea water are abundant in chloride ions. If the stainless steel is contaminated by these factors for a long time, it cannot be cleaned. Then as time goes by, the steel will lose its original luster.

2.Other factors that may cause stainless steel to rust include: long-term exposure to inorganic acids such as nitric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and hydrofluoric acid.

Different Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steel

(1)Austenitic stainless steel is not magnetic. Adding 18% chromium and containing a certain amount of nickel can increase corrosion resistance. They are indispensable in every field.

(2) Ferrite is magnetic, chromium element is its main content, the proportion is 17%, this material has good oxidation resistance.

(3) Martensitic stainless steel is also magnetic, the content of chromium is usually 13%. And contains the appropriate proportion of carbon, with the way of quenching and tempering can achieve the purpose of hardening this steel.

(4) Duplex stainless steel has a mixed structure of ferrite and austenite, the content of chromium is between 18% and 28%, and the content of nickel is between 4.5% and 8%, which has a good effect against the erosion of chloride.

(5) The conventional content of chromium in precipitated stainless steel is 17. And a certain amount of nickel, copper and niobium are added, which can be hardened by precipitation and aging.
