Duplex Steel | What You Must Know

Physical Properties of Duplex Steel

High strength: The strength of duplex steel is significantly higher than that of conventional steel and can withstand greater loads. Its yield strength is usually twice that of type 18-8 austenitic stainless steel.

Excellent ductility and plasticity: it can undergo large deformation without breaking when it is stressed. Its elongation in solid solution state reaches more than 25%.

Good weldability: It has good weldability and small hot cracking tendency. Generally, no preheating is required before welding, and no heat treatment is required after welding. Therefore, it can be welded with a variety of materials (such as 18-8 austenitic stainless steel or carbon steel).

Thermal conductivity and coefficient of linear expansion: Compared with austenitic stainless steel, this steel has a higher thermal conductivity and a smaller coefficient of linear expansion. So it is suitable for use as the lining of equipment and the production of composite panels. In the same way, it can also make the tube core of the heat exchanger, and the heat exchange efficiency is higher.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Duplex steel

  • Advantages

High strength: can save materials and reduce equipment manufacturing costs.

Excellent corrosion resistance: suitable for a variety of corrosive environments, extend the service life of the equipment.

Good weldability: simplifies the processing and manufacturing process.

Good comprehensive mechanical properties: both high strength and good plasticity and toughness.

  • Disadvantages

High price: Due to high manufacturing costs, the price of duplex steel is relatively expensive.

Complex manufacturing process: advanced production equipment and technology are required to ensure product quality.

Poor resistance to hydrogen embrittlement: Under certain conditions, duplex steel is prone to hydrogen embrittlement, which affects its performance.

Easy to produce local corrosion: although the overall corrosion resistance is good, but in some local areas may still produce corrosion, need special attention to maintenance and maintenance.
