What Are the Properties and Uses of SAE 4150 Alloy Steel Rod

Properties Of SAE 4150 Alloy Steel Rod

1. Chemical composition of SAE 4150 alloy steel rod:

Carbon (C) : The content is usually between 0.48% and 0.53%. However, according to some data, SAE 4150, as a carburized steel, may have a lower carbon content, ranging from 0.10% to 0.25%, to ensure that the core of the part has sufficient plasticity and toughness.

Chromium (Cr) : 0.80% to 1.10%, is one of the main alloying elements and is used to enhance hardenability and strength.

Manganese (Mn) : 0.75% to 1.00%, which also helps to enhance hardenability.

Silicon (Si) : 0.15% to 0.30%, which has a certain influence on the strength and hardness of steel.

Molybdenum (Mo) : 0.15% to 0.25%, which helps enhance the corrosion resistance and high-temperature performance of steel.

The contents of phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) are both relatively low, not exceeding 0.035% and 0.04% respectively, to ensure the quality of the steel.

2. Physical Properties:

Density: 7.85g/cm³.

Melting point: 1427°C (2600°F).

3. Mechanical properties:

Tensile strength: It can reach 731MPa (106,000 psi) in the annealed state, and the strength will be further enhanced after heat treatment.

Yield strength: Approximately 380MPa (55,100 psi) in the annealed state.

Impact toughness (Izod) : 24J (17.7ft-lb), showing good toughness.

The elongation and reduction of area are also relatively high, reaching 20.20% and 40% respectively, indicating that the steel has good plasticity.

The hardness can be adjusted according to the heat treatment process. In the annealed state, the Brinell hardness is 197 and the Rockwell B hardness is 92.

4. Heat treatment characteristics:

SAE 4150 steel has excellent heat treatment responsiveness. The factory can optimize its performance through processes such as normalizing, quenching and tempering.

Vacuum heat treatment can reduce oxidation and decarburization, and improve the surface quality and toughness of the workpiece.

Application Fields of SAE 4150 Alloy Steel

Due to its high strength, excellent toughness and wear resistance, SAE 4150 alloy steel rods are widely used in multiple fields:

1. Machinery manufacturing industry: Mechanical parts such as gears, shafts, and pins that are subjected to high stress, enhancing the service life and durability of these parts.

2. Automotive manufacturing industry: Key components such as axles, frames, and steering rods, enhancing the safety and stability of automobiles.

3. Oil and gas industry: Drill pipes, casing, drill bits, wellhead pipelines and other equipment, meeting the usage requirements in deepwater drilling and high-temperature and high-pressure environments.

4. Aerospace industry: Manufacturing structural components such as engine parts and landing gear parts to meet the high requirements of the aerospace industry.

5. Other fields: It is also applied in construction engineering, power industry and other fields to manufacture high-strength fasteners, bearings and other parts.
