Product Introduction
ASME SA516 – Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service. It available in four grades: Grades 55, 60, 65, and 70, according the different strength levels. A516-70 Steel Plate. The most common grade, ASTM A516-70, a medium carbon alloy designed for use in pressure vessels and boilers.
Scope of ASME SA516 Pressure Vessel Plates Specification
This specification covers carbon steel plates intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important. Plates under this specification are available in four grades having different strength levels as follows:
The maximum thickness of plates limited only by the capacity of the composition to meet the specified mechanical property requirements; however, current practice normally limits the maximum thickness of plates furnished under this specification as follows:
For plates produced from coil and furnished without heat treatment or with stress relieving only, the additional requirements, including additional testing requirements and the reporting of additional test results of Specification A20/A20M apply. The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units shown in brackets. The values stated in each system not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the specification.
Chemical Composition:
The steel shall conform to the chemical requirements given in Table 1 unless otherwise modified in accordance with Supplementary Requirement S17, Vacuum Carbon-Deoxidized Steel, in Specification A20/A20M.
ASTM A516 GR.55-70 Mechanical Property:
Tension Test—The plates, as represented by the tension test specimens, shall conform to the requirements given in Table 2.
Heat Treatment
Plates 1.50 in. [40 mm] and under in thickness are normally supplied in the as-rolled condition. The plates ordered normalized or stress relieved, or both. Plates over 1.50 in. [40 mm] in thickness shall be normalized. When notch-toughness tests are required on plates 11⁄2 in. [40 mm] and under in thickness, the plates shall be normalized unless otherwise specified by the purchaser. If approved by the purchaser, cooling rates faster than those obtained by cooling in air are permissible for improvement of the toughness, provided the plates are subsequently tempered in the temperature range 1100 to 1300°F [595 to 705°C].
Additional Condition
- UT(Ultrasonic examination),
- AR(As Hot Rolled only),
- TMCP(Thermal Mechanical Control Processing),
- N(Normalized),
- Q+T(Quenched and Tempered),
- Z Direction Test(Z15,Z25,Z35),
- Charpy V-Notch Impact Test,
- The Third Party Test (such as SGS Test),
- Coated or Shot Blasting and Painting.
Conclusion
SA516 is a carbon steel plate grade utilized primarily in welded pressure vessels for moderate to lower temperature service. This material produced in grades 55, 60, 65 and 70. This material offered in the normalized condition where improved notch toughness required.
