DIN 1.2601 is a cold work steel featuring superior abrasion resistance and toughness at its hardness, due to its ledeburitic internal structure and 12% chromium content. It belongs to the group D steels of high-carbon, high-chromium varieties, which includes D2, D3, D4, D5 and D7.
These all contain 1.5 to 2.35% carbon and 12% chromium; however while the others are hardened through air cooling, the only exception is type D3, which needs to be oil-quenched for best results – although smaller sections can also be gas quenched after austenitization with a vacuum. Taking into account that type D3 tools tend to be brittle when hardened, type D2 is considered the most reliable choice among the group D steels.
Applications
It has excellent cutting performance, good compression resistance, stronger toughness than D3, and can be nitridized. Suitable for cutting tools, stamping die, wood products, deep stamping tools, cold roll, measuring tools.
